Debut of Barolo Serralunga 2008 at “the great Barolo terroirs”
“2008 is a vintage that will fill you with powerful emotions”… does that sound familiar? It did not take the promise made by Enrico Rivetto (Ed.: post on 04 April 2012 http://blog.rivetto.it/en/5313-are-you-ready-the-barolo-serralunga-2008-is-on-its-way ) long to become reality.
On Saturday 22 April, a sea of vineyards with still-trembling leaves and the majesty of Mount Monviso with its court of immaculate peaks framed the castle of Serralunga, the site of an event promoted by the GoWine association, “The Great Barolo Terroirs.
Wine-lovers from all over Italy and the world (Germany, Russia, USA, UK), including our own importer, Voliovino (Denver, CO, USA) Charles Lazzara, had the opportunity to compare the Barolos of different producers, noting the considerable influence that the different terroirs of a limited area, like that of Serralunga, have on the wines.
This is what the Consorzio Tutela Barolo Barbaresco Alba Langhe Roero has to say about the vintage: from the qualitative perspective of Nebbiolo grapes, the 2008 vintage achieves excellence thanks to the favourable climatic conditions that permitted a late harvest, and so with better maturation conditions: fixed acidity with a slightly higher level than recent years and excellent levels of sugar concentration.
The consequences for the Barolo Serralunga Rivetto can’t help but be exceptional: good acidity and minerality, a highly developed bouquet (perceptible intensity despite that slightly too-cool temperature inside the castle of Serralunga), but about all an enchanting tannin, which as with all of the best traditional Barolos, needs to develop slowly, over the passage of years.
